Fine-grained cryptocrystalline (CC). Some of these have metal beads, some are the so-called “turtlebacks,” and some are translucent. Note, however, the characteristic aerodynamic forms.

PORPHYRITIC OLIVINE

Porphyritic olivine (PO) micrometeorites are large olivine (forsterite) crystals in glass that suffered a relatively low peak temperature during their atmospheric deceleration. They display morphological varieties from a mosaic of evenly distributed small crystals of cumulatively increasing sizes to just a few extremely large crystals or even possibly a single olivine crystal. They range in color from black (most common) to brown, green, and colorless. At times they have an irregular surface that may cause confusion in their identification, and they may be mistaken for asphalt spherules (see here). PO micrometeorites are often vesicular with visible metal beads on the surface, squeezed in between the olivine crystals.
